in reply to: Bad Hair Detective YouTube video on contest! #12038
Yeah, that had me rolling, especially the part about Murphy being a legend and then that clip of him. I’m sure they will get that taken down somehow, it’s too embarrassing and a bad look for any future comps they put out.
in reply to: Did the judges listen to all the mixes? #12026Where can you read the fine print for this contest that states that those three guys will be the only ones who judge all the mixes? I’m curious if they even bothered to cover their arses. I’m saying it’s normal for assistants (or similar) to go through the bulk of the entries because this was the case with other contests (not on Rate my Mix) that I’ve seen. I totally understand where you’re coming from though, but I myself don’t get too worked up about the shadiness that can surround mix contests.
in reply to: Did the judges listen to all the mixes? #12024It was suggested by Kristian to not use samples, but I don’t recall it being forbidden to use them in the rules, or that it would lessen your chances of winning. I mean for the remixes, it would kinda be expected that people would be using samples to augment, or replace altogether the drums. At the end of the day, the mixes are being judged on if they evoke an emotional response and get you excited. How you get to that end result doesn’t really come into play.
in reply to: Did the judges listen to all the mixes? #12023I think it’s unrealistic and unfair to expect the judges to listen to every mix in a contest with thousands of submissions. It’s pretty standard that assistants will listen to and narrow it down to something more manageable for them. After-all, these guys do have work they need to do as part of their normal day routines. It’s best not to get your hopes up with these type contests and just enter them for the soul purpose of getting better and adding to your mix portfolio. Just my opinion.
in reply to: Did the judges listen to all the mixes? #12017Damn, that’s not cool at all and a bad look really. It’s one negative comment thread, just leave it.
in reply to: Dražen Kecman – Dead To The World Mix Contest #11996Congrats man, nice job.
in reply to: MxD – Dead To The World ORCHESTRAL REMIX #11995Congrats man. I wish you some better days ahead. Winning should definitely lift up your spirits a bit.
in reply to: Did the judges listen to all the mixes? #11994I’m sure they have their assistants listen to the bulk of the mixes to weed out the bad mixes and get a smaller pool of the quality ones for the judges to listen too. I’m surprised if any of the judges would have to listen to 40+ mixes. I would think they would get 10-20 max to actually have to judge.
in reply to: Dave Johnson – Malamor – Dead To The World – Mix #10824I did pan the mono guitar verbs to the opposite sides. Maybe the automation to bypass the verb send on those parts isn’t quite on. Without everything being on the grid, automation in general was trickier than usual between song sections.
in reply to: Dave Johnson – Malamor – Dead To The World – Mix #10816Thanks Echoes. Yeah, a few have commented that they liked the guitars. I remember they weren’t cutting through the way I wanted and wound up boosting a shit ton more 4k or about on the guitar bus, more towards the end. Even the mix as a whole, I kept brightening it up. I switched up my 2-Bus chain that I mix into, so I was getting used to things. I definitely noticed my midrange came out a lot better than usual, but not so much the lows and highs.
in reply to: Dave Johnson – Malamor – Dead To The World – Mix #10815Hmm.. yeah, maybe too much verb. I figured most mixers would keep them dry, so I went for something different. I don’t think there’s any verb on the guitar when there’s only one though. One time is completely dry, another has the filtered tape thing and then the flanger one. If there was a 4th guitar break, then that might have verb on it… can’t remember. Thanks again for the feedback and taking a listen.
in reply to: Dave Johnson – Malamor – Dead To The World – Mix #10813Thanks Shaun. Yes, I will for sure have a listen to your mix
in reply to: Dave Johnson – Malamor – Dead To The World – Mix #10720Thanks for listening. I didn’t listen to a ton of Death Metal back then, but Alters of Madness was a fav of mine and kind of the inspiration for my mix. I loved the keyboards and even though it had a muddy low-end, there was just something about the vibe of that record that I enjoyed. Unfortunately, my mix suffers from the same low/low-mid mush. I wasn’t able to get the separation between the kick and bass that I wanted.
in reply to: Dave Johnson – Malamor – Dead To The World – Mix #10676Thank you Steve
in reply to: Dave Johnson – Malamor – Dead To The World – Mix #10469Thanks man. The flange is just on that one break. UVI Shade.. one of my fav fx.
