My reference track was Dying Fetus – Subjected to a Beating. Dying Fetus used to come through my little corner of Delaware every now and then, and when I mixed them live, they were the band that I clicked with the most.

Thanks! Yeah, if I were producing this from the ground up I would have recorded very different kicks in the first place. But when I mix somebody else’s recording, I figure they had to have done what they did for a reason so I didn’t push that kick click all that far. I mean, the click was there in the trigger, but I felt the trigger sound was a bit lifeless so I wanted to lean on the real kicks more…

I dunno… I like to work with what the recording is telling me to do. That being said I still had to push the original sounds around a bit to compete with the reference track I was using.

Dude, I love that your mix is like the opposite philosophy of mine. You have such a cool polished studio take on this song. I’ve only ever mixed metal at live shows, so I did what I knew and worked with the raw ingredients in front of me.

That’s the cool thing about music. People can approach the same thing different ways.

I love the crispy drums and the brutal bass guitar. The kick might be the slightest bit too crispy, but that is a tiny nitpick. And really with this genre who is too say what “too much”is anyway? I do wish I could hear the high vocal a little but more. But this is one of the best mixed on here. Really great job.

I think I did… I sent the email late afternoon east coast Friday. It’s been 10 years or so since I’ve crossed paths with mixing death metal. And back then I was mixing live shows only. This was a really fun throwback.
