in reply to: Jere Sulku – Dead to the World Mix #4429
I appreciate the feedback, Tommi. Listening to mix with your notes in mind I can tell that you’re right, my mix does sound a bit empty. I guess that’s what you get when you mix mostly LCR? One reason might be that I cut the lows out of the rooms and I panned them hard left and right. Listening to other mixes I reading your feedback I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to pay more attention to the high-mids on guitars.
in reply to: TH // Malamor – Dead To The World (Mix) #4426Overall this is a pretty good mix, nice work. Although, to me the lead vocal has some harsh sibilances. Maybe it’s the compressor, maybe the de-esser could have been set slightly better. Drums sound cool for this kind of mix. The snare has a nice crack to it, but it seems a bit, in lack of a better term, “clouded”. There’s some build-up in low end that sort of mask the snare, I think. Perhaps the rooms are a bit too loud? Kick drum could have used a bit more click and guitars could have had a bit more bite, but I suppose that’s just a personal preference. Like I said, overall it’s a good mix. Definitely one the better ones I’ve listened.
in reply to: Jere Sulku – Dead to the World Mix #4412Thanks for the feedback! On overheads I simply used volume automation every here and there on top of a simple eq and a compressor with a fast attack and release. Looking back, maybe the attack is indeed a bit too fast just like you said. I might have gotten away without using one at all, but it is what it is. I cut a lot of highs from the rooms, I suppose that also has something to do with the cymbals being under control.. There’s lot of saturation on the snare, which makes it very punchy, but in return I lost some transient attack.
in reply to: Peter Nikolov – Dead to the world- mix #4289Clearly, you were going for an old school kinda sound. I gotta say, I kinda like this! To my ears the lead vocal is a bit too loud and guitars could be louder in return, but overall it’s a good mix – one of the better ones I’ve listened!
