    Hey guys, here’s my entry for the contest. I only used the provided tracks and tried to keep their integrity intact, but decided to go for a more modern overall sound. Modern Old School, if that makes sense. Good luck to you all and may the best mix win!

    Nicely done! These are very difficult tracks but you managed to get punchy drums while keeping the cymbals under control. Compressor attack is maybe a tad fast.

    Thanks for the feedback! On overheads I simply used volume automation every here and there on top of a simple eq and a compressor with a fast attack and release. Looking back, maybe the attack is indeed a bit too fast just like you said. I might have gotten away without using one at all, but it is what it is. I cut a lot of highs from the rooms, I suppose that also has something to do with the cymbals being under control.. There’s lot of saturation on the snare, which makes it very punchy, but in return I lost some transient attack.

    Drums are indeed quite punchy for what they were, but guitars for me seem very harsh and the overall mix seems to be lacking stuff from between the mid and sides… Hard to explain what it is but there is very present stuff in the center, far left and right but nothing in between those if this makes any sense.

    That 2k frecuency in the guitars is a little harsh in my opinion, but otherwise it’s a nice mix

    I appreciate the feedback, Tommi. Listening to mix with your notes in mind I can tell that you’re right, my mix does sound a bit empty. I guess that’s what you get when you mix mostly LCR? One reason might be that I cut the lows out of the rooms and I panned them hard left and right. Listening to other mixes I reading your feedback I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to pay more attention to the high-mids on guitars.
