Hey Shaun, solid mix. The drums sound a little distant in the room for my taste. Nice subtle vocal-fx
Thanks sir, i appreciate it. Yeah i kept the room mic’s pretty low. I didn’t want to overdo the vocal effects so just a little delay here and there. Appreciate the listen and the comments.
Hey, Shaun, that´s a great mix, man!
I really like what you did with the drums, taking so much time to polish them that way. It´s hard work!
I like the bass tone a lot too.
The only thing is that the overheads on the drum sound a bit mono to me. At least not wide panned, you can notice that on the crash hits. Besides that, drums sound quite good.
Congrats and good luck!
Thank you!
Thank you for the listen and critique. Yes the drums were a ton of work on this one. I put a lot of time into those so it’s nice they stood out. I put a stereo widening effect on the guitars and maybe that is what is making the cymbals sound more mono. The overheads are panned slightly inward, and the room mics are panned hard left and right. You are the second person that noted this…definitely something for me to keep an eye on. I appreciate it.
Good luck to you as well.Nice:)! I like sub freq. on toms. Really huge:)
Thanks, yeah i thought the original toms were a little flat sounding so i did some things to beef em up. Appreciate the listen, and comments.
I love the crispy drums and the brutal bass guitar. The kick might be the slightest bit too crispy, but that is a tiny nitpick. And really with this genre who is too say what “too much”is anyway? I do wish I could hear the high vocal a little but more. But this is one of the best mixed on here. Really great job.

@schaun : “The level of fuckery i went through on these drums was something else, it was a convoluted process for sure. Sorry for the long post here, but this is what i did. I went through and stripped all noise from all shells on the original tracks. I multisampled the original hits the best i could. Created my own samples (.TCI Files) from the original drums here, but i pre-processed them heavily. I then created midi from the original drum files so i could more easily move around the kicks and hits that were a little all over the place timing wise throughout. Then i used Slate trigger to retrigger the performace using the original drum samples i created from the track. I tuned the snare up, quite a bit, and used some augmentation with samples from my own person drumkit to give a little more beefiness to the toms, and kick. Good ear! ”
Holy shit dude ! You went ballistic with this !
This is something something i would with a full release (EP or album) except that i would use clean samples i would have made from the recording. Must have been very cumbersome but makes plenty of sense,, considering these days multiband gates and stuff allow us to filter live tracks a lot and make them almost clean (aka bleed free).I really love the fact that you made the most out of the original drums, and that you tuned that snare up (i love cranked snares, and i almost always tune then up when i use virtual snares from like Superior Drummer or something).
“Damn dude!!!!!! Thank you so much. I appreciate the comments so much, i worked hard on this mix to try and retain some integrity of the original, but make it a bit more modern. Can really feel the Dying Fetus comments for sure! I love the cranked snare on those early/mid 2000’s records. Thanks so much for the kind words. ”
My man !
@shaun : “Vocals on this were the easiest part to mix, i felt they were recorded the best from this session for sure”
Big time !
Hi Shaun, your mix tone sounds fine. In the middle of dark and bright. it seems like you put a lot of work on isolation. Very define. In my opinion, If the vocal makes a bit wider /closer/colour, maybe it can match the vibes you create. and the kick seems like losing some lows attack when it hits. I don’t know which reason caused it, or maybe a phase issue. I hope that can help you. As I mentioned before in my post, I am not that familiar with the metal genre, so I can only tell you something subjective.
