Hi !
Here is the YT video I did. It’s just a brief overview of how I processed my mix.
Keep the guitar track panned centre. Pan the delays on the stereo send track left and right. I don’t tend to have it on all the time. I send into it but i automate the send level to emphasise the guitar width
i’ll experiment with a few ideas. Typically i would throw on Boz Digital Pan Knob and set the crossover to about 180hz to keep the low stuff in mono and pan the rest of the guitar hard left or right. If i’m liking that i’ll try that idea i mentioned with the widening illusion and if i still feel that the guitars need extra width i have a send set up with a widener plugin that i send my guitars to. Best thing to do is experiment and A/B and see what you like the most.
For me it went something like this:
Step 1: make big
Step 2: make more big
Greetings all,
This isn’t exactly the same as the mix I submitted but it’s close enough and shows you some of the stuff (technical terminology) I used in that mix.
I noticed everyone sounded kinda similar but I didn’t know why until I actually watched the official video of the contest lol (at this point already sent my submition) anyways what I did was to feel the music and mix it, as I said in my submition post I didn’t heard anything vintage about it, the production doesn’t sound old so I did what I could to make it sounds like the sound I had in mind.
About my mix: I barely added tracks, maybe 2, the rest are automation and fx tracks that I added but that’s it. After editing the drums and vocals, I finished the mix which took me around 1.5hrs and spent around a week listening to it and taking notes and then fixed everything.
About the kick, I quantized just one track, like I kept all the hits of the 2nd track in the middle compared to the 1st track so you still hear kinda the mistakes in timing but the 2nd kick is always at the middle so the double kick sounds like it is being played properly but in reality it is not. I also EQ’ed the OH tracks just to hide the original kick, did some mid EQ there.
About other mixes: I heard a lot of issues with the toms, they aren’t there or are played very quiet, not properly panned or have been switched to drummers perspective, etc. Also lots of low ends out of control or too boomy, I’d recommend using ozone before you send your submition, it will tell you the issues your mix has and even fix it.
Well good luck to everyone!!
If anyone likes to peep into my reaper-project, here you go.
You only have to relink the trackshttps://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/zmb633n8vkjgotiz8hz4y/h?dl=0&rlkey=vk2unz53td6pc8fptvl8chy5p

Betonmischer.
@betonmischer : loved the “DENENENENENEN” marker :)
After listening to the track I felt I needed to emphasize the emotion and the groove. I thought this is a madman taking revenge, I have to give him a chainsaw. 😉 Before the “You have to tell me something” lyrics, you should hear the chainsaw turning on!! There is intentionally a little more at 400 to 500 hz in it (Bad Kick). I also didn’t want to cut too much out of that area on the vocals because I wanted you to hear his chest and His full anger. The track should sound like a Demon is coming at you with spread wings.
I ended up having some troubles because of a stupid export mistake, so I couldn’t make some fixes, but I had to meet the deadline.
However, I have a 5 to 10 percent better version that I might upload when the winners are known to respect the contest rules!
For me I tried to not use a lot of processing as the takes are already great and I didn’t use samples for drums.
I grouped all the tracks into my main 16 groups that I always use in every mix because I prefer to work with real faders and since I have only 16, I always group my tracks to have only 16 of them to deal with + 8 for busses and auxes, like in a real console.
In each group the biggest work was done with an SSL Channelstrip emulation with its UC1 controller, then I generally use a hardware unit for heavy compression or to add character, and finally a surgical or a smart plugin to solve issues.You can find all the chains used for each group in the video below:
Don’t hesitate if you have any question 😉
@SilversteelStudio : Nice !
How do you like your UC1 ?
Have you also tried the UF8 (i guess not since you already have that crazy Digidesign controller) ?The SSL UC1 is a game changer, mixing with it is very fast and more fun, plus it allows to mix without looking at the screen which helps making some moves that normally we are afraid of making like boosting to much or pushing the compressors hard. With it you can rely only on what you hear and « disconnect » your eyes.
I didn’t use the UF8 because I have the Procontrol but I heard good things about it. Personally I prefer the Procontrol because it’s bigger and there are enough space for each fader and button instead of having everything concentrated in a small space. -
