The good thing about the “sound engineer competition” is that you don’t have to stick to conventions. In addition, the organizers encourage you to create a unique sound. If everyone mixed it to the usual sound, there would be no point in the competition. A song can be interpreted in many different ways just because the sound engineer works according to a different concept. So I think that the bigger room sound on the drums helps to perceive other instruments differently than in an average mix.
