Hey everybody, so this is my mix!
First of all: I had to mix this entirely during a train ride with an ICE train to Hamburg, Germany so I just had some headphones.
Since I’ve been listening to OG Death Metal for quite a while, I wanted to achieve a mix, that sounds like one back in the days but with a bit of a more modern touch.
My mixing approach was to keep the original vibe and character of the tracks and not over-edit them too much. It should all sound like a REAL live band playing together, tight as hell in one single room and the listener is standing besides them.
Some thoughts and ideas for the different parts:
Drums: I love the vibe of the recording and the sloppiness of the doublebass passages. So my goal was to not overproduce the single tracks but to enlighten every part of the drum kit. Somehow I couldn’t get along with the snare. It lacked some attack and was played inconsistently. So I added a one-shot of a Joey Jordison Snare to it to give it a little bit of extra pop. Also I wanted the kick to have a little bit more of a natural sound with a lot of more low-end although I love 90s kick triggers.
Bass: Loved that super dry and gnarly DI track and also the amp track. So I decided to let the amp track play along to the DI which I ran through a NDSP Darkglass B7K with a customized Alex Webster preset with more distortion and then into a Plugin Alliance Ampeg SVT-VR to get a classical 90s Death Metal tone but also a more modern high gain touch.
Vocals: Absolutely loved that vocal performance as well as the quality of the tracks. Just did some basic vocal processing stuff: some Eq-ing, some CLA-76 compression, some more analog EQ-ing and at the end some reverb and quite a bit distortion.
Guitars: These guitar track definitely got everything I love about 90s Death Metal. They sound super guttural, got a hell of distortion but somehow they are also super beefy and remain super gritty, especially during palm mutes. Did not that much on them to remain exactly how brutal the raw these tracks sound like.
I hope you guys like my mix – I‘m open for every kind of feedback!

Nice mix, especially if done just on headphones.

Thank you! Did 95% on my headphones. Opened my reaper project after a week for listening to it on my monitor speakers and tweaked a little bit here and there. Overall I‘m super happy with the result.

You can be happy. I also mixed the most of my mix on Headphones. Great Mix!
