    Almost forgot to share this with the community. I’ve been away from the past few RateMyMix contests, but the moment I heard this one I knew I had to have a play. So I did a very quick mix weeks ago, just to see what’s what with the tracks. Then I spent a few minutes each day on a new mix until 2-3 days ago, where I binned it and started from scratch again. Irony is that this one wasn’t too far removed from the original quick go I had weeks ago. Fairly happy with it, but it’s my own fault for rebooting at such a late stage in the deadline. First mix I’ve done in about a year as I’ve been busy with other things in my life, so I’m extra rusty on top of everything else.

    Done in Reaper. Actually not a great deal of tinkering to get it to this stage. I could probably remove about half of the plugins loaded, and be none the wiser. I just left them there to funk up the sound a little (got to love TMT and “analogue” random generation functions). First time I’ve mixed entirely with in-ears, and with DearVR Monitor to get some of that crossfeeding room-ness.

    Without further waffling…

    Enjoy, and good luck everyone entering.

    Nice !
    I also mainly used stock Reaper and BX SSL 4000G for my mix.

    One thing though : i think your vocals might be too loud.

    It’s a pity, the mix is unfinished and not balanced, the vocals fall out of the mix and everything except it is “muddy”, but it feels like the work has been done, don’t be upset, you’re on the right track, I’ve been wrong many times myself.

    @djabthrash Thanks for the feedback.
    Yeah, definitely. If I was limited to changing just one thing of my mix, it’d be to bring the vocals down a bit. I noticed myself when I listened back the following day from submitting it.

    A fine choice. I went with the BX SSL 4000E version myself… but may have turned on the G dynamics section a couple of times haha.

    @Serge Thanks for the feedback.

    I hold my hands up for it being unfinished and vocals sitting proud. Mistakes are good, we learn from mistakes. I’ll take your feedback on board, cheers.

    @profrust, When I opened my Dark Times Collaboration competition mix a month or two later, I heard my mistakes and what a “slag” my mix was, but at that time, the time of sending to the competition, it was my maximum.

    In the interest of science and learning. Here’s a headphone version of my mix. So this is what I was hearing while mixing, as for the first time ever, I used DearVR Monitor in Reaper’ Monitor FX bus to see what my mix supposedly translated to in a physical environment. This version is identical to my submitted mix, only I’ve moved DearVR Monitor to the end of my mixbus to print everything through it.

    If you’d be so kind to compare the two versions over real monitors, if possible, that’d be a big help for me. I was dubious about the virtues of these virtual “mix room” plugins, so haven’t really used any in anger before. However, it may turn out that as a mixing effect, it’s a good balancer? Who knows.

    @Serge
    I wish I still had my projects for my previous entries, they’d make some interesting studying. I hated my “Clockwork” mix, but entered it anyway at the time. My “Chelsea” mix was actually not that bad from memory. It’s a good point though, people should go back over previous entries every so often. I’m definitely planning on remixing this track in the near future.

    @profrust : when you were mixing with headphones, did you A/B your mix with reference mixes just to see if your mix was not completely out of whack ?

    @djabthrash I did a bit of A/B-ing, though admittedly not as much as I’d usually do just because I was in such a rush. The mistakes keep piling up haha.

    That said, every time I bypassed DearVR Monitor I’d be questioning my sanity, but I just gave it benefit of the doubt haha. When I get chance, I’m going to check my mix on my dad’s old hifi (Old 70s Pioneer thing with really big speakers that sound killer), and A/B reality with what said plugin thinks reality will produce.

    I’m thinking I’ll actually completely remix this, how I normally work, over the weekend if I’ve got time…

    @profrust : Gotcha ! I’d say A/Bing is one of the way to minimize the effect of a bad or unusual mixing environment.

    @djabthrash Yeah, I really should’ve known better. Hindsight is always 20:20 as they say haha.
