This is my analog production of the lovely song “Glow” by Lianne Kaye.

I recorded the main vocals and guitar tracks provided by Lianne from the computer onto a Fostex R8 tape machine and did my overdubs afterwards. Recording and Mixing was all done through a Tascam M-224 console. Hope you like my 8-track tape version of Lianne’s song as much as I enjoyed producing it the analog-way!

not sure if my ears are playing tricks on me but I’m hearing the smoothness that tape is giving out! and warm. You can tell how it responds when she hits the big notes towards the end of the track being smoothed out! Also nice arrangement, you more than welcome to hand over that tape machine if you get bored of it 😁

Haha, thank you! Might take a while until I get bored, I guess! 😅

Apart from the nice saturation of the tape, the thing that stood out for me are the drums and how natural they sound. No over processing or multitude of filters, sample replacement, compression and the like which seems to be how people think acoustic drums should sound.

Thanks a lot, appreciate it! 🙏 I’m using 4 microphones: Glyn Johns setup (overhead and side) + bass drum + “Wurst” in the middle of the kit to glue everything together. Some compression on the “Wurst”, a bit of EQ-ing and panning and then sending it as a stereo signal to my tape machine. Reverb added later in the mix and that’s it.

Nice work and sound (the analogue tape and all that stuff gives something “extra” defently and helps, it has to do more with the “natural” dynamics, harmonics and the smooth but effective compression they add, rather about the “warmness”).

I really appreciate the work you put into this. I really like the piano line and that every part of the song is somewhat diffrent sounding.

Couldn’t agree more with everyone’s comments above – I had to listen to this one when I saw you’d used an 8-track – awesome work! Really natural sound from your tape machine – congratulations on sticking to the analogue realm and getting such an excellent result! Good luck!
