I love melodic, symphonic, and power metal, but I’ve never mixed it much, and definitely never tried Death Metal. At first, I challenged myself to mix this with only Ableton Live stock plugins, which I did. But when I went back and listened it was just terrible – way too much compression on the vocal, mainly. This likely has more to do with me not being using to doing that and to my listening environment on the computer I used, than it does with the quality of Ableton stock plug-ins. Nevertheless, I went back and mixed it instead in my usual way. I’ve used a lot of izotope Neutron for EQ-ing and I used an SSL-4000-E emulation for a lot of additional character EQ and compression. Other effects include some iK multimedia plugins (which I love), especially a lot of MixBox.

On the Master, I used iK multimedias T-Racks-5, mainly their “One” plugin, and a mastering EQ from AVA.

I was happy with the first draft, but then when I listened to it the next day, it was still a little dark, so I brightened it up for this final version by just adding one more EQ shelving boost on the master buss. The brightening effects may be a little too much in the bass, but I’m pretty new to mixing compared to many of you, so I don’t expect to win this competition anyway, if I’m being honest. So, I felt it best just to submit what I have and move on. I’m working on some other projects and have spent enough studio time on this now.

Anyway, I would love to hear thoughts from any of you. Feedback is how we learn. Looking forward to reviewing others’ mixes on here. Thanks Warren and Kohle Audio Kult for the tracks!

Thanks for commenting on my mix, here to share the feedback :)

The mix is quite loud and gnarly, it’s a unique sound. The bass is clearly audible and has a very nice growl to it. However, I think the guitars are a bit buried under the bass and the vocals.
