Hey all, I’m pretty stoked to get a shot at mixing a classic Death Metal song! I kept everything pretty simple and mixed this in Reaper. I wanted to get a fat heavy tone with the guitars with this one. I felt that the guitar was kind of thin in the original mix. Vocals I did a bit of a stereo effect just to give it a bit of flare and difference to the mix. Drums were a bit rough. I felt the toms were kind of badly tuned, but I did the best I could with them. I didn’t replace anything in the drums with samples.

Hope everyone likes the mix and thanks to Warren and the rest of the guys for putting these contests together! And good luck to everyone!

Bass sound gives me an old Cannibal Corpse feel. Good job!

Maybe the snare is too compressed? the mix sounds good tho.

    Cheers!

I basically left the Bass tone alone and just made a few EQ tweaks with a bit of compression. I did pretty minimal stuff with the guitars as well. The drums were the hardest to deal with. I didn’t like the sound of them at all, but tried to make them work without replacing anything with samples!

I remember metal back in the day and I wanted to keep that same vibe with the mix. I’m glad you think I nailed it!

Thanks, it is basically left alone other than slight eq and compression. I dug out a lot of 350 in the drums and boosted the bass in that range slightly. It sounded like the original mix when I did that, so I stuck with it.

It might have gotten a bit lost in the heavy parts of the song. Probably overall compression when I mastered it. I’m still working on that. Mastering was not required of this, but I always like to polish my mixes and its good practice. Mastering is a whole other level after mixing and I like to learn all I can.

I did a remix of this. To be clear, I’m not trying to submit this as a replacement. Just an alternative mix I did that I thought people would like to hear. I did a bit of tweaking, and the main thing was adding a distortion pedal to the bass guitar to give it some filthy grit and guttural tone to it. I think it’s a better mix, but I think my original mix is more ‘era’ correct than this one. It’s all to taste though and I like what I did on this one too.
