I can mention that I did mix in some samples for kick and snare, but kept quite a bit of the original sounds, and tried to go with a sample style not too far off from the original. The bass is mostly the DI through Bogren’s Bass knob STD. Almost every single track goes through a
Waves ssl channel, with most of the eq and compression happening there, apart from vocals where the CLA-76 does the heavy lifting. And a bit of automation 😆

Thanks man! Yeah, I felt like the snare and BG vocals could be cool with some added space, but kept the reverb/delay quite light on the main vocals to stay closer to OSDM and not wander too far into BM vocal territory 😎

Good mix and overall balance of the elements! From the getgo it´s maybe a bit harsh in the upper mids. Could have to do with the bass area to be a little subdued though. I think giving some more bass to the bass gtr and kick could round out the sound enough to counteract the harsher upper mids from the guitars.

Thanks man! Yeah, managing the bass overall was one of the harder parts of this mix, thanks for the suggestions. I did quite a few versions with different bass levels before I landed on this final one. It’s the one that perhaps just sounded most balanced to me in my specific setting, ie. on my Beyerdynamic DT880:s and my airpods :D – no mixing on monitors here unfortunately due to apartment living and children who’re not into death metal yet =D .

nice job on preserving the original drums. mix feels a bit harsh. i dig the liberal use of reverb, but i think its too much on the snare as it kinda drowns out the blastbeats. not a fan of that kinda untreated bass sound, sounds almost like farts. good mix overall tho, the elements come together nicely, which is the most important aspect of any mix. interesting how we’re in a similar situation as we’re both mixing on headphones (sennheiser hd 280 in my case) and took me a while to get the low end to feel right on systems with better bass response. best of luck to you man!

Thanks for your comments! Bass was pretty much only the DI through Bogren’s Bass Knob, which of course has its particular flavour. Haven’t heard it called ”farty” before, but I sorta see what you’re meaning 🙂 I kinda like that ”smell”, though, hehe 🤘

Mixing on headphones sure is a bit tricky.. I try to listen to lots of music on my mixing setup just to get used to what music is supposed to sound like in this setting. Took a while to get used to the kinda bright sounding DT880’s but now I quite like them. Especially with the quite decent headphone amp in my SSL2. Directly from the macbook they sound a whole lot muddier.

Cheers and good luck with the competition! 🍻
