Feeling a little bummed.

I understand where you are coming from, BillHughes1960. I also tend to agree with you. I like to produce as well, so it’s fine by me. This time I just wanted to do a mix so that’s what I did. I considered it a challenge mindset to make a mix as good as I could that could compete with the great productions that people on this site do. I do think there should be multiple categories, though. Though in modern mixing, were gradually becoming more and more relied upon to add parts etc. I do get purely mixing projects but I also get some where I need to build the song some as well. However, yea, maybe a category just for mixing to judge that type of work and producing a separate thing. I know there were contests in the past that Warren Huart did that were explicitly “just for mixing” and “do whatever you want”.

I get where you are coming from Bill – comparing 1000+ mixes with remixes in different styles is a difficult task for sure.
I am fairly new to mixing and I know I don’t have the skills or equipment to compete with the best mixers – but for 45+ years I have played in bands and arranged songs etc and I like to think I have some sort of musical instinct, so for fun I tried a remix in a different yet traditional style. I entered the competition mainly to get some feedback on my remix – but I have definitely benefited from listening to the other entries, particularly the mixes using only the original tracks. I guess we all have different motivations, but I had fun working on the track and it feels good to put something out there for scrutiny.
