Hi Folks, I hope you’re well.
Here’s my revised mix (I ruined the last one, lol.) My previous mix was my competition entry but I had to go on record and do a better version for my sanity. Comments still welcome :-)
Thanks.
It’s not bad, just your drum sound is too sterile, dry and hard for this direction, especially snare and cymbals have no separation. they merged into one crash.
but this is a well-intentioned criticism, I certainly haven’t heard anyone here do a bad job of these excellently recorded tapes.
cheers and all the best, if you have time listen to mine too. for the first time I did a remix and not a pure mixHey Ed.
Nice revision.
The snare is still an issue for me personally.
I’m not sure about the synthetic sounding white noise tail on snare. Again in the choruses it’s not so bad. But in 2nd verse it sounds odd.
Your overall tonal balance for me was good. Your tones for guitar were nice too.
I would be very interested if you do try something with the snare. Post again! :-)
Cheers!See… I said your re-doings would be good.
Solid mix. Sounds like you kept and/or leaned on the real kick which is admirable!
Obviously a great sounding kick, but it was tuned lower than I prefer for this style and once I realized Mr. Carrell had just gone with the sample entirely for the mix I went ahead and went that way too.
Anyhow, I like that you made that choice and tailored your mix around the original kick as the sort of anchor – very cool.
Everything sounds nice and balanced and presents the song well. Well done!
Good one Ed and keep up the good work with your YT channel! Good luck mate!
Yeah, you completely revisited this. Toms are different. The mix sounds full. Most drummers that I know would have muted the keyboards. Haha
I like your panning scheme – no one has done it like this, there is a lot of motion and energy.
Cheers. And yeah, it’s been very emotional. Especially with all the revisions I made while working on this.
I referenced my DT-770 Pros, my Sony MDR-7506, ATH m50, K701s, Auratone cubes, CLA-10As… I never tried calibration until today and I am excited to see what that’s like, instead of constantly jumping between monitors. I enjoyed listening to your videos on monitors. (They helped keep me awake on my early morning drive through the canyon.) How long have you been doing calibration?
