Hello there everyone here’s my submission for the mix contest. It’s my first time mixing anything that isn’t my own band so feedback would be great. Here’s what I did.

Kick is about 80% sample. Chose my own sample, didn’t like the provided one as much. No other samples on drums. Most of the drums are gated to avoid bleed. Lots of EQ shaping on snare. Crushed the room mics, maybe too much? Reverb to taste.

Sidechain vox to kick drum, ducking the kick 1-2 DB when there’s vox.

Lots of automation on vox and drums. Some automation on everything.

Ran the bass DI through an SVT plugin. Extra DI tracks for a blended chorus/flange effect, and a blended bass distortion that drops in and out a few times. Lots of compression on bass.

Multiband compression and some EQ moves on guitars to try and bring them a bit more forward. Parallel distortion track pretty low in the mix.

Normal compression and de-esser on vocals. Parallel vox processing for saturation, reverb throws, modulation/chorus, delays, then mixed in some duplicates of the main vox pitch shifted.

    Added background orchestration at 0:43
    Added background synth/effect at 1:03
Added feedback for effect at 1:15, 1:18 and end of track
Added background 808s for some low rumble starting at 2:46 through end

Little bit of tape saturation running into a limiter on master track.

The overheads aren’t crushed too much for me, the kicksample is nice, a little machinegunny starting at 2:30 abouts. Didn’t really notice it before that mark.
You definitely had fun with this and I was struggling to find ways to keep the energy up and interesting, adding those little orchestra and synth effects did work :)

Thanks a lot for the feedback! And yeah I agree about the kick – if I’d programmed the drums in midi I would’ve messed with the velocity of the sample more, but I’m honestly not sure how to do that yet when triggering the samples from a real kick. First time I’ve triggered from real drums like this, I’m used to working with fully programmed drums. Thanks again

On my first attempt I did try and midi the kick, but I gave up on that idea and just used the original tracks, beefing them up a little with a subkick

Haha sounds tedious, I probably would’ve given up on that idea too! Cool, I’ll check out your mix too
