    Hello everyone,

here is my contribution to the contest. I had loads of fun mixing it… hope you enjoy it.

The main idea behind the mix is to make it less harsh than the original and bring it a bit more up-to-date. I wanted to keep it raw, though, to keep the energy. I found it extremely hard to bring some structure to it since there are so many parts and instrumentation is almost always the same. So I played around with width and a bit of automation.

I used Reaper as DAW and restricted myself to Schepps Omni Channel as main tool since it gives me a bit of an old-school console vibe. I used FabFilter Pro Q3 for surgical EQ, FabFilter Pro R for reverb, and my usual master bus FX (FabFilter Pro-C 2, Pro-R, Pro-Q 3, Black Box HG-2, Soft Clipper, and Pro-L 2).

I had a hard time uploading the track to SoundCloud because they said that there were copyright issues. Thus I posted it on YouTube:

    Cheers and happy mixing

Nice vocal balance and sound, i like the kick sound too. The hihat is a bit too bright for my taste.
    The overall sound is solid.

    Good luck!

Hi Carsten, I used Reaper too, but I think that’s where the similarities end. Your mix sounds so much more open than mine, especially the vocals. Great job!

The bass sounds very muffled–it was definitely a challenging track to work with. The mids are quite scooped overall so some things like the snare sounds a little thin, and it also has a lot of sizzle along with the hi-hat. I think the balance of guitars vs. vocals. vs. drums is on point though.

    Thank you for the feedback.
Yeah, I still struggle with the right amount of top end on the cymbals and hihats.
Also, I was a bit undecided in the tonal ballance and went for the more scooped sound since most references I used were in that direction, too.

Thanks so much again to you for your time listening and giving feedback. All the best and good luck in the contest.
