Anyone else feel bad for the judges that need to not only sift through the NUMBER of mixes submitted but also need to find a way to PICK one? They all sound INSANE. I wouldn’t be able to choose.

What a time to be in music.

Great Job with the vocals! The overall balance is good. Kick drum is clicky to me and the cymbals sound a little harsh but overall not bad. I also might use a different reverb for the drums but that’s just me. The track has a vibe and that was one of the main things I was struggling with so good job with that as well.

You’ve got a great ear Adam and thanks for the kind words! I definitely can see where you’re coming from with the clickiness of the kick. It would make a lot of sense to go back and maybe dial that in a bit more if I had the opportunity. Cymbals are definitely on the brighter side. Maybe a bad move but I did that on purpose.

I don’t know about you, but the struggle I had with this mix was making it modern while still trying to pay homage to the original mix that the band decided on. One of the things I noticed in the original mix was how bright the cymbals were. That was something that was probably very deliberate and genre specific so I wanted to make sure I accentuated that while still keeping it tame.

It may bite me in the butt though because I agree: they are quite bright/harsh

But dude, you’re a legend. Thanks so much for taking the time to write such a detailed reply–especially from a great mixer like yourself!!

Hi Andrew.Johansen ! Your mix “sounds” quite powerful and it has a “sound” quite in tune with the times (compared to the original mix which surprises me a little, taking into account the era). There is a small imbalance in the drums: too much click on the kick and really intrusive cymbals. Nevertheless, everything remains quite balanced and I really like the powerful and aggressive voice, as it should be… Good mix!

The amount of mixes entered into this contest is insane! I love listening to them though, so many differences! The kick is pretty clicky indeed, which is fine, but if it’s clicky it could be a little lower in the mix, no way of missing it.

I have no idea what the original mix sounds like, was that posted somewhere? Or just the few snippets from Warren’s video?

The energy of your mix is amazing though, I’m listening while I’m typing this :)

It’s funny how every mix I listen to makes me second guess choices I made with mine haha

More importantly, thanks for your valuable feedback–feedback that I will definitely take into consideration moving forward in my journey in sound.

@Lpino Great point. I’ll think more carefully about how clear the snare is in my mixes moving forward. Thanks for taking the time to check out my mix and providing some valuable feedback

@whoosh71 The clickiness of the kick seems to be a common theme with my mix. I was going for metal but maybe a little TOO metal haha

But yeah, I just typed the song in on Spotify and was able to find the real version there. I used that as my reference as I figured the band would want something that sounds similar to that. A lot of my decisions were based on what the final song sounded like.

And like you, I too find myself second guessing what I did. It’s enough to drive me up a wall! haha

To combat that, I’m trying to not compare my mix to anyone else. Instead, I’m asking myself questions based around control. Can I control the outcome or did my mix all happen by chance? Control is what I’m striving for and with my mix, I’m happy to say that it’s how I would like to hear the song and I’d be ale to replicate the result. Having that command over my decision making makes me very happy and helps me not get down on myself when I hear other amazing mixes–mixes like yours!

I appreciate you taking the time to check out what I came up with and write such a nice comment. Best of luck to you!!
