here’s my submission. Kept the production, especially the drums, as natural and organic as possible. hope the midrange sounds as vibrant as I intended it to be. So without further ado, here it is. give it a listen :)

Sounds polished and in your face without sounding overproduced. I’d say you achieved what you set out to do! Glad to hear I wasn’t the only one to add about 20 dB of high mids and high end haha

dont worry they’ll make them all the same volume before judging them. its quieter than the reference tracks i used, but its definitely loud compared to some of the other entries lol. thanks for listening :)

    Hi Alex,

I can hear you went to some trouble to make the mids sit right. I like that aspect of the mix. The bass and guitar sounds complement each other well and I like that you didn’t indiscriminately scoop the guitar mids. Also lots of ear candy throughout the mix that I rather enjoyed.

I can, however, hear some problems with the top-end of the kik drum. With the amount of midrange rolled out it’s basically a high-sub/bottom-of-the-bass sine wave with a 7-8k click stuck on top. While that might be exactly what you like in a kikdrum, it creates problems with the blast beats feeling oddly lopsided.

Also some issue with the transients on the toms. Apart from being too low in the mix they sound (to my ears; i might be wrong) like they were compressed really hard with too fast an attack time.

But again, nicely done on the bass + guitar sound.

Nice Mix, I like the more polished vibe with still having the liveliness! Good Luck!

thanks a lot for the feedback. glad you enjoyed the midrange. as for the kick, most of what your hearing is the kick mic itself. i dont feel that lopsidedness you describe is really an issue, if anything (in my albeit biased opinion) i feel it adds to the feel of an actual human playing the song and not a robot triggering everything. you’re absolutely right in your criticisms with the toms tho. i dont feel they’re a particularly important element of the song, so instead of losing my sanity obsessing with making them sound super massive and whatever, i just made sure they do their job helping fills and transitions flow smoothly. the idea was too feel more than hear, ya know? maybe i only took that approach because i suck at mixing toms lol. in any case i really appreciate the feedback, and best of luck to you!
