Thank you Lupino. This was something I really struggled with actually. When I pushed her vocal up it tended to overtake my vocal. Her voice is so much stronger than mine. I think that’s probably what makes it sound a bit off when its quiet. Thanks for the feedback. I’d love to know an approach to tackling this kind of issue. It’s something that comes up quite a bit
I feel like i also lack the experience to give a (more) qualified solution, but what i try when two tracks clash in the same frequency space is to pan one to the center and the other to the outer stereo spaces. I do that by doubling the “outer” track, reducing the width and panning the original left and the copy right. So the listener has the main vocals in the middle and the second(ary) voice “around” that.
