I agree that there should’ve been two separate categories for the contest, otherwise those of us who did mixdowns were at a huge disadvantage. It was still fun to mix a well produced track for sure, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed when all the winning entries were remixes. Especially just now after seeing one of David’s replies on…[Read more]

    • Thanks Phillip for the reply..I understand your disappoint..But i don’t feel any..I like very much Warren’s work and it was very fun for me too..I just want to mention that it is more fair to compare Mix against Mix and no against Remix..Thats all for me..Can you please sent me the link with the official announcement? Thanks..

In my very humble opinion if by the time you’re mastering you have to “re-evaluate all of your mixing choices” or do tons of processing your mix isn’t done. Whatever reevaluation of mixing decisions or the tons of processing can and should be done at the mixing stage, they can be done faster and easier too. If you notice you tend to do a lot of…[Read more]

I just heard your remix and IMO the biggest difference between theirs and yours isn’t mastering, it’s the actual song. And your remix is not bad at all, just that the team happened to prefer the announced top three. I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but even if you did master your remix it’s not going to suddenly increase your chances.…[Read more]

    • the point is that i expected not to win but i thought that i would have been blown away by the tracks of the winners and i wasn’t………the choice of the team was perfectly fine because is was based on personal preference and that’s a given in music, in general everyone likes different things ( thank god!) for example to me the best ( my personal…[Read more]

    Unfortunately the deadline was 04/11.

    • Well that’s a bummer. I wish they had updated their website, it still says that the deadline is yet to be determined.

    It’s a mix/remix contest, combined.

  • Just saw Michael’s announcement, congrats to the winners! I especially like Chris’s remix, so moody and vibey! Now I’m just waiting to hear Ariel’s mix of the song and see how mine compares. Could Warren, Michael or David please share the mixdowns that they personally liked? Since all the winning entries are remixes I think it’d be real helpful t…[Read more]

    • HI Philip, yes, I loved that remix as well! Here is a link to the SoundCloud with the winners! Also Michael’s video is posted above!

Mastering wouldn’t have made much difference, they level match the entries. So they either turned up your remix or turned down others or both.

    • that’s what they said but have you listened to the 3 winners?
for example yours was good too but like theirs the big difference form mine is the mastering part ( btw i am not saying that you did a bad job or that i am a better mixing engineer than you because i am probably not) however i don’t wanna be whining for something that i can’t control so…[Read more]

    Awesome! Thanks Warren!

For now, yes. And this one is in the process of being reviewed by the team. Hopefully we’ll get more in the future. For the time being you can google and check all relevant links that show up. Off the top of my head I know there’s http://www.mix-challenge.com, they run monthly contests in various genres. It’s a bit too serious to my liking, but it’s…[Read more]

  • Warren if you see this, perhaps you could provide us a brief status update in the next faq friday? Even a list of those who made it into the final round of elimination would be cool, if you guys are at that stage that is. Thanks!

    • Hi Philip! I really appreciate all of the amazing work everyone did! Blown away with the incredible quality! There was so many incredible remixes to go through! Michael just sent me his short list that he confirmed with David and it’s truly wonderful! The Winners announced on Michael’s Channel in a few days!

How were you able to tell they reviewed your submission? Did they use their official PLAP account or something? I don’t have soundcloud pro so I can’t see detailed stats for my submission but I did see a play from The Workday Release account (I assume David) a while ago, but I don’t think he’s part of the review team is he? As for the lack of…[Read more]

I think 04/11/11:59 pm was what Warren and Michael intended, up to and including 4/11, just that the original deadline didn’t clarify am/pm so it might’ve been a bit confusing. Honestly doesn’t matter though, we’re two weeks past it.

Thanks for the awesome contest Warren, David and Michael! It was fun mixing a well produced and arranged track. Any word on when we might get to hear Ariel’s mix of the song? I’m sure I’m not the only one that wants to know where we stand against a pro level mixer! Thanks!

  • Philip Fu posted a new activity comment 3 months, 1 week ago

I like your remix, real chill! Too bad you didn’t have the time to properly mix it, would’ve given it more liveliness! Good stuff.

  • Philip Fu posted a new activity comment 3 months, 1 week ago

I’ll give your remix a listen.

  • Philip Fu posted a new activity comment 3 months, 1 week ago

Edit: Actually now that I go back and listen I think you’re right, it’s the drums. I can hear how some people would find the high hats still too bright.

Thanks for your feedback! I believe you’re talking about the vocoders, I’m not a big fan of them in the chorus to be honest, they almost make it sound distorted. Muting them would defeat the whole point of having them in the song so I left them alone. I try not to mess with the arrangement when mixing unless it’s really going to interfere with the…[Read more]

    • Funny because the vocoders were one of my favourite parts from the stems. I actually didn’t use any of the chorus vocals except for the vocoders (but i attempted a remix, not a mix). That must be because I love Daft Punk a little too much too 🙂

  • Hey all, I was thinking now that we’re past the deadline, perhaps we can do some peer critiques? I’m thinking the way we could go about this is people who want their mixes/remixes critiqued just post an update and those interested give them a listen and provide an in depth critique. What do you think?

Make sure not to post your links again as…[Read more]

    • I’d love some feedback too… I was in a rush and managed to post a remix with original production like 2 minutes before the deadline but I didn’t have the time to work on the mixing per se (no EQ, no compression, no effects), so it’s really not balanced at all (even though it sounded acceptable in my monitors, i listened to it on other devices…[Read more]

Nice remix. I think the high hats are a bit too bright and distracting though, kinda pull the attention away from the lead vocals. Other than that I like what you did with the song, good one!

Thanks! I’ll give yours a listen as well and leave some feedback.
