Here’s my attempt for the competition:
Hey guys,
don’t you agree, that these are the most professional played and best sounding multitracks we ever got here? It just felt like “pushing up the faders” and off-we-go!
Many thanks to Warren Huart & Joe Carrell and a big shout-out to all involved musicians!Good luck to y’all!
Hi Jens,
I would try to focus a bit more on the kick and the snare; I think they have too much reverb and lose transparency. You almost cant hear the kick anymore.
I dont think kick and snare need much more reverb as the overheads/rooms add space to them already. Try removing that extra reverb, it will make a difference.
I like the vocals though; they sound really nice. :)
Hope that feedback helps. :)@Thomas_Kramer, that’s quite interesting. There’s not that much extra-reverb on the drums (only sent from the snare-sample). For my ears it’s enough pressure from the kick, but that always depends on your type of speakers/headphones. What do you use in detail? I have a pair of Yamaha HS-7 and as headphones Focal Listen Professional.
Thanks for listening and checking out the details! :-)
@Scottwazear, thanks for listening!
hey, I think the mix lack of clarity. maybe if you clean up the mud and the reverb will make a difference. the vocal sounds good thou. hope that feedback helps. goodluck cheers
Thanks for checking out my mix, @MilkMonster . Already too late, the mp3 is submitted…
I really like how the vocal sits. It feels like there’s lots of space around it even with the dense low end. There’s so many neat entries into this contest and it’s fun to hear everyone’s interpretation!
@flattappetsound, thanks for listening!
Yes, there are already so many creative, funny and good mixes, although it’s still a lot of time until the deadline. There’s a lot more to come…Best regards!
The roomy drums sound like a Steve Albini record, very convincing big room sound you’ve got going on. I agree the kick could use some presence, probably just a matter of adding a little midrange.
The good thing about the “sound engineer competition” is that you don’t have to stick to conventions. In addition, the organizers encourage you to create a unique sound. If everyone mixed it to the usual sound, there would be no point in the competition. A song can be interpreted in many different ways just because the sound engineer works according to a different concept. So I think that the bigger room sound on the drums helps to perceive other instruments differently than in an average mix.
@Luukmeijwaard, thanks for your kind words! But I’m unworthy beeing compared to the great Steve Albini. Meanwhile it’s a pity, that I submitted the mix without cross-checking the (slightly flat) kick. That’s life… hope I learned from this for the next competition. ;-)
Best regards.
That’s it @dacr :
” So I think that the bigger room sound on the drums helps to perceive other instruments differently than in an average mix. ”
I had a few people listening to my mix, before uploading & submitting it. All have a quiet similar musical taste as me. None of them found any reasons for not uploading. So I think, it also makes a difference from which musical basis you are coming, what kind of music influenced you during your “coming-of-age”, and what further development you experienced.Thanks for listening and your valuable comment! :-)
